Share It! for Speaking
NOTE—DO NOT GO PAST YOUR TIME—Doing so hurts the lab after you and
parents trying to keep their kid on schedule.
BEGINNERS: Welcome,
Impromptus, and the 4 Kinds of Speeches
Introduces students to the basics of
speaking and has them
do very short versions of each kind of speech (except PowerPointing because of
time issues)
RETURNERS: Work with
students to pick the kinds of speeches, topics, etc. Get them started on their
speeches—talking to each of them. I suggest having them do an impromptu speech
too.

Wed and Thurs by 630pm: Give Quick Feedback on EACH AND EVERY
Speaker in your Lab
Welcome the kids—make a
nice atmosphere for these kids—they may be a bit nervous as they aren’t in
their regular labs anymore.
Get them going ASAP—they
are going to be coming in not all at the same time. Figure a way to say “hi”
quietly to kids entering especially during other kids speaking.
START BY GIVING THEM THE
TOPICS—one set for the entire group in your flight’s lab. Give them7 to 10
minutes prep before the first speech.
Give them 3 REALLY EASY
topics to talk about. Tell them that they pick 1 of the topics.
Example/Suggested Topics
Flight 1:
Favorite Food
Change we need
What I learned in a class
Example/Suggested Topics
Flight 2:
Best Game
Supporting Social Justice
What I learned searching
the internet
Then tell them—what argument do they want
to make about the topic.
Then, come up with 2 points to support
that argument—along with supporting examples, stories, info from books they’ve
read, etc.
Then, get an intro (attention getter,
state the topic, state their argument) and a conclusion (sum up, show the
importance of what they discussed, and a finish)
STUDENTS SHOULD BEGIN TALKING within 15
minutes of the start of the lab.
Students do a full
polished speech
AND
Judges pick the best
presentation they see for the Showcase!
FILL
THIS OUT FOR RECOGNITIONS
After the Showcase, EVERY
LAB LEADER announces their recognitions for each and every student in their
Friday lab.
THERE IS A SPEECH
TOURNAMENT ON SATURDAY, the day after the camp finishes.
