DO THESE STEPS AS A JUDGE
Judges should have their webcam on.
Your emailed ballot tells you the first and last name
of each debater in your round.
Missing students? The team’s other students have to
give the missing student’s speech.
Are you missing an entire team? Send for help in the
Zoom breakout room.
FIRST ROUND—GIVE SOME GRACE—but things need to get going.
AFTER THE FIRST ROUND—5 MINUTES GRACE MAX. Prep Time begins then unless Jim Hanson tells you differently (and you can and should ask).
Microphone, Sound, Webcam Issues?
TRY ONE OF THESE:
--Is student wearing headphones?
If they can use the computer sound/mic, usually fixes the problem.
--Any student: In the lower left
of the Zoom screen—change the settings so it matches the headphones, mic,
webcam they are using.
--Reboot the computer. Reminder
students aren’t required to have webcam on.
Bad Internet?
--Tell the student to move closer
to the wifi router
--If parent is there, reboot the
router
--Switch to just audio—no webcam.
Weird/other problems? Reboot the computer.
Make sure you see it.
They are using electronic so can’t show it? Make them
answer _specific_ question about it. “What is typed at the top of the 2nd
Column on the Con Flowsheet?” “What is the argument on page 3 of the
Case-Response file?”
Your Script—Please read this or something very close
to it.
I want you to know I support you. You might be scared
and that is okay and natural to feel.
I want you to turn on your microphones. Do you support
each other? (get them to turn on mics and say “YES!”)
Great. For this round, you will be debating this topic:
Topic 2 Wed: Video
games are on balance harmful. (Tourn. Topic)
Topic
3 Thurs: Animal
testing should be banned. (Tourn. Topic)
Topic
4 Fri: Schools
should require students to wear a uniform.
___ team you are on the Pro side.
_____ team you are on the Con side.
Have one team with 3 students and the
other with 4 students? Ask the 3 student team “Who will be giving a second speech?”
As we begin the Prep Time, this is a reminder that
students must prepare on their own—no help from parents, family, friends, etc.
You prepare on your own and only with your debate partners.
Pro team, you stay in this room for Prep. Con team, you go to Breakout Room (+20).*
Con team to get there, you go back to the main meeting and then to that room
(the greeter will help you if you need it).
Any Questions before we start?
Okay, 10 minutes Prep begins now—Con be back in this
room in 10 minutes. (TIME IT!)
*The Con team goes to room +20 (eg if you are in
Breakout room 8, Con team goes to Breakout room 28).
When students return . . . your Script:
“I encourage students to have webcam on BUT it is not
required.
Let’s begin the 1st Pro Speech and I need people
to turn on mics and clap. We’ll do that for each speaker.
Have students clap/sign of support BEFORE EACH
DEBATER.
At all times, treat each and every debater with
equity and support.
Take notes and be thinking about what each
student is doing well and how each student can improve and as the debate
finishes, who has won the debate and why.
Please listen attentively and supportively during
the debate. These kids need positive faces, non-verbals, and directions.
DO THAT BY REPLYING TO THE BALLOT YOU WERE EMAILED.
We need the Winner and Points immediately or the
entire program gets delayed.
Start with a complement, supportive statement such as
“This was a very enjoyable debate. You did great!”
YES REVEAL DECISION State who you voted for and give
your reasons.
YES GIVE FEEDBACK Then, state at least one complement
and one improve to each debater.
After you finish, tell the debaters to return to the
main meeting room OR their school room.
Remember: Parents are reading these comments. I cannot
overstate how important what you write is for these kids and their parents.
Please complete this by 9pm.
