4 KEY SKILLS OF JUDGING

You need to review these 4 judging skills before each tournament.

1 Missing Speaker(s)? What to do

2 Deciding who ranks higher

3 Giving Speaking Points

4 Giving Feedback for your event:

Judging Impromptu Speeches

Judging Extemp Speeches

Judging Platform Speeches (Persuasive, Informative or Comedic speeches)

Judging PowerPoint/Slides Speeches

Judging Interp Performances

EACH ROUND, DO THESE 7 THINGS

1. Read your Emailed Ballot
ballot is sent from
jim@climbthemountain.us

What the Speaking Events Ballot Looks Like

TOPICS . . . Impromptu Topics     Extemp Topics

2. Read your Event Description/Feedback tips

Judging Impromptu Speeches

Judging Extemp Speeches

Judging Platform Speeches (Persuasive, Informative or Comedic speeches)

Judging PowerPoint/Slides Speeches

Judging Interp Performances

3. During the round—Write comments during and after each speech

You can write the comments on a sheet of paper or in the Comments Form you complete after the round.

Timing the speeches—see the event description. Students must be stopped if 30 seconds over (and ranked 1 down for giving the speech too long).

4. During the round—be supportive of the students—treat each student with respect and equity

5a. When a speaker is about to begin—ask for their name and make sure it is on your list (in your email and/or the posting).

If the student is not on the list—ask the student if they were told to come to the room by the tabroom/Jim Hanson. If not, they are probably in the wrong room.

5b. Missing a Speaker?

15 MINUTES OR LESS LEFT IN THE ROUND: Tell us the speaker is missing by contacting tournament staff with the name of the speaker, event, and round.

IF A SPEAKER IS NOT THERE TO BEGIN THEIR SPEECH BY THE END OF THE ROUND (See the schedule)—THE STUDENT FORFEITS THE ROUND.  But wait until the very end of the round before you do that.

6. Email Reply to the ballot after all the speakers have spoken including ranks and speaker points

Then . . .

7. Fill out the online comments for speaking events:
