Answers to the Quiz

Answers highlighted in green.

Judging Process

1. When should I email the winner and points from the debate?

a.   As soon as possible after the last debate speech

b.   When I complete the online ballot comments form

c.    When i get around to it

d.   After I talk with the students.

Please don’t talk with the kids first. Please don’t fill out the online ballot comments form first. The Tab Room desperately needs you to EMAIL winner and points so we can setup the next round and keep the tournament on schedule.

2. Most speaker points fall into this range:

a.   61-99

b.   70-89

c.    80s and 90s

d.   24 to 30

Don’t be “kind” to the students—be fair and accurate, otherwise you hurt the kids who don’t get the high points you are trying to give.

3. Score each of these speeches using the points scale:

a. A first speaker prop has great delivery, presents a really well organized and well supported case, speaks for the full 5 minutes, is inclusive and supportive of others, and they do not respond to POIs well and don’t ask any POIs.

b. A second speaker prop student delivers well, speaks for about 3 minutes, is kind and courteous, does not respond to the previous speaker’s arguments, makes some well supported arguments.

c. A third speaker opp student delivers well, speaks for 5 minutes, makes 2 great, well supported arguments not previously presented, is kind and courteous.

d. A second speaker that delivers, speaks for 4.75 minutes, makes well supported arguments, is kind and courteous, does POI’s okay.

a. 80s. Sounds like a great debater performance that needs serious work on POIs, an especially important aspect of being a first speaker.

B. Low 70s. Student needs to use full time and needs to respond to others’ arguments.

C. Low/mid 70s. Sounds like a good arguer BUT new arguments aren’t allowed in the 3rd speeches and so most of the speech is not done correctly.

D. High 70s to Mid 80s. Sounds like a decent but not outstanding debater performance.

4. What is the most important factor in making a decision about who wins a debate?

a.   Your knowledge on the subject.

b.   The speaker scores

c.    A gut intuition

d.   The most persuasive argument(s).

5. When judging an impromptu round, which below should be the main way of deciding?

a.   Vote for the team with the best statistics and sources

b.   Vote for arguments that show a team researched the topic thoroughly and prepared an excellent case and responses

c.    Vote for the team based on arguments where a debater showed common sense reasoning and explanations.

A reminder in impromptu rounds–teams MAY NOT research. Stats/quotes/experts are NOT relevant. It is how well the student can reason provide examples etc.
