GIVING SPEAKER POINTS

You give Points from 61 to 99.

Scores from 75 to 85 are most common and are for debating quality between the two below.

91 to 99 is for AMAZING REALLY GREAT SPEECH kids that are supportive and inclusive, use great AREI/Claim-Evidence-Support, do their speaker duties REALLY well, make and respond to Questions/POI’s very effectively, have great delivery, and speak for the full time of their speech.

61 to 69 is for SPEECH NEEDING MAJOR IMPROVEMENT kids that need to be more supportive and less rude, use AREI/Claim-Evidence-Support more and more strongly, need to do their speaker duties, use Questions/POIs and respond more effectively to Questions/POIs, be more clear in their delivery, and need to use MUCH more of their speaking time.

ODD SITUATIONS

Did a speaker give two speeches and their name appears twice in the team name? Give each speech a separate score OR give the highest score for both speeches.

What if a debater no-shows and is replaced by another debater? Give that debater a 61 (even if the replacement debater does a great job).

What if there is a debater named “aa” or similar. Give the speaker who gave an extra speech the points you would give for that speaker as if they were an actual debater.

HARMONIZE YOUR POINTS

It is important to be accurate rather than “nice” or “tough.”

Try to harmonize your points with other judges so that students are not put at a disadvantage nor an advantage when they get you as a judge. Your point giving should be consistent and equitable with other judges.

Most scores are 75 to 85.
