You can do makeup for missed team meetings—ask Jim asap when it happens.

Make yourself available for Debate Meetings and Tournaments

First, get your homework done so it does not conflict with team meetings and tournaments. Same thing with friends and family—tell them in advance when it isn’t best to visit you at Seattle University.

Second, having you in class to prepare and practice is critical to improving your skills, your partner’s skills, AND it improves your teammates’ skills. When you are gone, everyone suffers. You are wanted. Be at the meetings.

Third, if you can’t come to class—please tell Jim ahead of time as soon as possible.

--Obviously, if you are having a significant health issue, serious family/friend problem, we support you and will seek to make things work out.

You can do makeup practice/research—ask Jim.

Want to do another activity/have a class conflict?

--If you are participating in another Seattle U activity or class that might conflict with debate—tell Jim asap. We sincerely want you to be able to participate in that activity/class but we also need you to participate in our meetings and go to tournaments.

For those seeking van and especially plane travel tournaments . . .

We will do our best to be flexible with your objectives.

Still, if your other activity requires missing debate a great deal

and/or has an unclear schedule for its meetings—
you’ll need to consider:

1 Don’t do the other activity

2 Tell the other activity you wish to continue but you will be doing debate meetings and tournaments (coordinate your schedule with them and it is best to talk with Jim as well)

3 Limit your travel with the debate team (be sure to inform Jim of this)

Sorry, we cannot make debate travel especially by plane a priority for you when you are not participating regularly.
