Team Information
At ASU, we believe that the
primary function of debate is to help students clarify their personal values,
beliefs, and their place in the world. To this end, we have three major tenets
to our coaching philosophy: (1) Students should choose the arguments they want
to run, our job as coaches is to make those arguments strategic and
competitive. (2) Engagement and argument flexibility breed better debaters. Our
goal is to train debaters to be excellent at policy or critical arguments and
to compete without ideological blinders. (3) Hard work should be rewarded. If
you do what we ask of you (or more), you will travel and you will be
competitive. Our coaching staff has coached students to finishes as high as
semifinals in both the CEDA and NDT tournaments, including. First Round
at-large NDT teams. You’ll receive hands on work with both of us on a wide
spectrum of arguments. ASU is a
competitive policy team, having qualified teams to the NDT two consecutive
years. The number one selling point
of our program is that we provide great, nationally competitive opportunities
for young students, whether or not they were ever national superstars in high
school. If you are motivated to succeed, our squad will provide you with the
opportunity and the coaching to make success at the highest levels a
reality. Educationally, Arizona State
has an amazing Honors College, ranked in the top 5 nationally (http://publicuniversityhonors.com/new-top-programs-by-category/).
Amongst large school honors programs, in fact, ASU is ranked second, behind
only the University of Michigan. Barrett, The Honors College at ASU (http://barretthonors.asu.edu/) is an
incredible facility which the University and Alums have been pouring money into
over the past decade. Private dorms, a first rate cafeteria with chefs carving
meat off the bone in front of you, or prepare a vegetarian feast with fresh
local ingredients if you prefer, personal access to any number of classrooms
for you to study at any time of day, and a Harry Potter-themed great hall for
eating meals with your friends. The quality of students (your potential peers)
is amazing, and this is an incredibly important aspect of quality education
that is often overlooked. Going to class with bright students will both
challenge and motivate you. The honors college is on a mission to find
intellectually engaged students from outside the state of Arizona, and debaters
fit this profile perfectly. As a result, current members of our team have been
awarded a great amount of scholarship money by Barrett and the University. As a small liberal arts school located
within the largest University in the US, Barrett also offers a unique
educational experience that virtually no other school can match. At Barrett you
can gain the benefits of a small school education while simultaneously having
every imaginable social and programmatic benefit of a large university. Major
musical artists, comedians, actors, and politicians all regularly set foot on
the ASU campus. Any social club, fraternity, extracurricular activity, or sport
you could want is available in Tempe.
In short, ASU will offer you a unique opportunity to be competitive at
debate, earn a rewarding education, and experience all that college has to
offer.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
Arizona State as an
institution offers a wealth of funding for out of state students. In our experience, debaters fulfill many of
the criteria ASU values for scholarships. As a result, you will likely be well
taken care of by the university. This website ( https://students.asu.edu/scholarships
) has a detailed list of the scholarships available. This website has all of
the Barrett, the Honors College at ASU specific scholarships opportunities (http://barretthonors.asu.edu/admissions/scholarships/
).

Team Information
Bethel University’s Forensics
program is a comprehensive individual events and debate program. We participate in parliamentary debate,
Lincoln Douglas, all individual events, and Readers’ Theater. Students can
choose from between 16-25 different tournaments during the year. We travel across the Upper Midwest, but go
outside of the region as well. We also attend the National Christian College
Forensics Invitational, as well as other major tournaments such as Novice
Nationals, the National Parliamentary Debate Association, and the American
Readers’ Theater Association. We take
very seriously the notion that each student is on our team for a reason; our
goal is to work with the student to identify that reason and to help in her or
his development as both a speaker and a person. Bethel is consistently ranked in the top 25
in the Midwest among colleges and universities with master’s degree programs.
Bethel significantly outperforms Minnesota and other peer institutions in the
National Survey of Student Engagement. Bethel operates within a distinctly
evangelical Christian framework, equipping women and men for culturally
sensitive leadership, scholarship, and service around the world.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
Bethel offers scholarships of
up to $4,000 per year for incoming freshmen and transfer students based on past
performance as well as potential for future performance. Information about
scholarships, including an application, can be found on the team’s website.

Team Information
We are a smaller program with
both national and regional exposure that’s quickly growing and getting more
institutional backing. Lots of individual debater attention. Everyone on the
team gets to travel. We do both critical and policy debate, as well as allow
debaters to develop whatever style they desire. We were ranked 1st
in the nation in 2008 and have been consistently in the top 10 nationally for
the past 7 years in a row.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
We do not offer any
scholarship money. However, you can earn
four credits and a grade every semester you debate. Students with incoming high school experience
can immediately transition into national travel. Students with little or no experience can
expect a strong regional presence with some options to travel nationally.

Carleton’s program strives to
balance competition with fun as we compete in NPDA Parliamentary debate. We welcome debaters from a variety of
backgrounds, including complete newcomers to the debate world as well as those
with extensive high school or college debate experience. The team is entirely student-run and
student-coached. Despite our inclusive
approach, we achieve a good amount of competitive success at tournaments around
the upper Midwest each year, and annually attend the NPDA National Tournament.

Team Information
Our program is one of two
full-time NDT/CEDA policy debate programs in the entire state of
Pennsylvania. Clarion has been very
successful in recent years working with novice, junior varsity, and varsity
level debaters as we have qualified for the NDT, won the ADA National
Championship in JV, and been a finalist at ADA Nats in novice in the past three
years. Furthermore, we offer our
students a host of on-campus speech and debate opportunities to supplement the
intercollegiate avenue. Our goal is not
to simply make you a successful debater in terms of wins and losses, but to make
you a better educated and responsible person as a result of your participation
in the activity. If you have any questions, please email Jim Lyle (jlyle@clarion.edu) or call give a call
(814-393-2476).

The Cornell Speech and Debate
Society encompasses policy debate, worlds debate, and speech – with dedicated
coaches for each. Cornell’s policy debate program is one of the largest and
most diverse programs in the U.S., with dozens of participants equally divided
over all three levels of competition: novice, junior varsity, and varsity.
Cornell’s policy debate consistently ranks within the top 15 in the country for
CEDA points, and this year (2016) is likely to finish the year in the top 5.
The policy debaters travel to approximately 14 tournaments every year.
Cornell’s words debate team is top-ranked and competes throughout the nation
and world. For example, students recently competed in the United Kingdom and
Greece. The speech team also travels
throughout the year and participates in events such as platform speeches and
dramatic interpretation.
Understanding that Cornell is
an academically rigorous Ivy League school, tournaments are always optional and
we always stress school first. One of
the benefits of debating in our region is that tournaments take place on
Saturday and Sunday, so participants can go to tournaments and not miss any
classes. All levels of experience are
welcome, and we have a coaching staff that strongly encourages people who have
never debated before as well as coaches who prepare students for national
competitions. The Cornell Forensics Society encourages students to try out any
of the events we offer and find the one they really enjoy.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
There are no debate-specific
scholarships, which is part of a Cornell-wide policy. However, Cornell does
offer various need and merit based scholarships.

Forensics at CSU Fullerton
provides an opportunity for students to participate in intellectual competition
in both individual events and debate. Members of the CSUF Forensics Squad
engage in competition with students from other colleges and universities at
both regional and national tournaments. For those students with aspirations of
competing at the national tournaments, CSUF Forensics provides excellent
tournament travel opportunities.
Students also have the
opportunity to participate in the squad’s outreach program, the Southern
California Urban Debate League (formerly the Daniel Webster Project). This
unique program is designed to provide rigorous mentoring while teaching
responsible advocacy through academic debate to students attending under-served
high schools.
In addition to hosting a
college tournament in January, we host two high school speech and debate
tournaments - one occurs every October and is a TOC qualifier with 1000
competitors from 64 schools
CSUF is committed to using
forensics activities to enhance students’ critical/analytical, research, and
communication skills. Beyond these skills, students learn about the importance
of teamwork, responsibility, and leadership. Interested CSUF students should
simply sign up for the course, HCOM 138.

Team Information
Dartmouth College offers a
special combination of excellence in both academics and debate. The school is
always ranked among the best colleges in the nation. It also has a long history
of success in policy debate, including 6 NDT champions. At least one of
Dartmouth’s teams (and usually the maximum of two) received a first round
at-large invitation to the NDT for over thirty consecutive years. The program is open to anyone with any
experience in high school policy debate.
Debaters entering the program vary widely in the extent of their high
school experience, but the differences quickly diminish as the less experienced
debaters gain from their participation in our program. Dartmouth has one of the
larger college policy debate programs with usually 10 - 12 teams competing each
year. The College is very supportive of
debate and provides maximum opportunity for all of the teams, including a
number of full-time coaches and a large travel budget. All teams, including first-years, travel a
tournament schedule that will challenge them.
Tournaments are selected so that teams will have to debate their best to
clear to elims; for most Dartmouth teams (again, including first-years) that
means traveling the national circuit.
The programs covers all expenses involved in debating: airfare, vans,
hotels, entry fees, meals, supplies, printing, photocopying, etc. The debate
offices are conveniently located, large, and fully equipped for the debaters to
work in. Despite the academic demands
of an Ivy League institution, with good time management debaters can do very
well in both their classes and debate, and still have time for other things.
Classes always come first, before research assignments and tournament travel.
Our debaters regularly do exceptionally well in classes and go on to attend the
nation’s top law and graduate programs.
The Dartmouth squad tends to be social, friendly, and supportive of all
its members. Debate at Dartmouth is fun.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
Like all the Ivy League
schools, Dartmouth does not offer any merit-based scholarships—no athletic,
academic, debate or other assistance not based on need. The College does, however, tend to be very
generous in its need-based assistance.
Admission to Dartmouth is need-blind, and the College is committed to
making it financially possible for all who are admitted to be able to
attend. Most financial aid packages
include work on campus. We hire all
eligible debaters to do debate work, photocopying evidence, etc. While this does not provide additional money,
it is more convenient that working in the library, food service, etc. Most
debaters do work in our summer high school programs, one for 3 weeks and another
for 4. The pay and the hours are far
better than most of the summer jobs college students are able to find.

University students participate in Forum activities either as competitive
debaters, public debaters, interns and judges, or assisting with major Forum
sponsored events. Over forty students will represent Emory University at
various intercollegiate debate tournaments throughout the academic year.
Are scholarships available at the

The Barkley Forum, in
conjunction with the Emory Admissions Office, awards a merit scholarship to an
incoming first year student every year. Applicants must demonstrate academic
achievement and debate excellence to be eligible for consideration. Applicants
must submit their application directly to the Barkley Forum for review by the

Team Information
The modern debate team at GSU
competes in a variety of tournaments, both regional and national. We
participate in NDT, CEDA, and ADA-sponsored events. Students are paired into
two-person teams through a combination of their own input and guidance from the
coaching staff. How often (and to which tournaments) a student travels will be
determined by a combination of factors including experience, academic status,
and the student’s own interest in competing. We are committed not only to
supporting, but to celebrating all kinds of diversity on our team. The goal of
the coaching staff is to provide an environment where everyone feels
comfortable and enthusiastic. The
debaters themselves have developed most of the practices we follow. Those who
are interested in higher level competition usually choose to take on a greater
research load, but everything produced by anyone on the team is shared by all
debaters. We do not have “card quotas,” but we do expect those who volunteer
for assignments to live up to their responsibilities. Coaches frequently help
debaters with arguments, but debaters almost always make their own decisions
about what to research and which arguments to run. We support traditional
policy argumentation as well as critiques and even more radical attempts to
change the basic framework of debate.
GSU hosts two nationally prominent college tournaments every year. In
September, we host the GSU National College Debate Tournament, which has become
one of the four most significant regular season competitions in college debate.
In February, we host the Southeast and Southeast Central CEDA Regional
Championship, which also serves as a qualifier for the National Debate
Tournament.How Competition Works Our
goal is to maximize the number of quality competitive experiences for every
student on the team, and to make sure that students travel to the kinds of
tournaments that are appropriate for them. Georgia State pays for most aspects
of a debater’s travel, including: transportation, lodging, meal money, and
supplies. The coaching staff serves as a liaison between students and faculty,
but students are expected to be proactive in their academic lives. OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES We believe in serving Georgia State
students. For us, this means that we travel everyone who wants to participate
and who commits to representing the school with integrity. It also means that
we think debate should enhance, not preclude, academic and interpersonal
success. We believe in serving the
Atlanta community. We are committed to furthering urban and rural debate
through both academic and volunteer work. We believe college debate should
foster and support high school debate. Debaters are encouraged to explore
avenues for positive activism. We believe in mutual respect between and among
debaters and coaches. We believe that debaters are motivated by their own
desire to succeed. Coaches do not yell at or disrespect debaters, and debaters
respect coaches’ perspectives and experience. We never, under any
circumstances, accept intolerance or rude behavior. We believe that debate should be enjoyable,
as well as educational. The team should function like a healthy family, and the
practice of debate should bring satisfaction to those who are involved in it.
We work to make debate practice, research, and competition a positive
experience for everyone.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
GSU is a “Hope” school, which
means that if you are a Georgia resident and have a 3.0 or above, you can
attend free of charge. Additionally, the debate team has a number of
out-of-state tuition waivers it can use to reduce the cost of tuition for those
who are not Georgia residents. GSU also provides generous traditional financial
aid, including academic scholarship. The
debate team offers scholarship funds to experienced high school debaters on a
case-by-case basis. Please contact Dr. Bellon directly if you are interested.
We also have a number of work-study opportunities with the debate team for
those who qualify for federal work-study support.

Gonzaga University has
supported competitive policy debate as a cornerstone of a Jesuit education for
over 100 years. Over the decades Gonzaga has maintained a strong tradition of
debate manifested in both educational and competitive excellence. The program competes extensively on both the
national and regional NDT/CEDA circuits. A typical travel schedule includes
Kentucky, Wake Forest, Harvard, Pepperdine, USC, Berkeley, Northwestern, and
others. The program has qualified teams to the National Debate Tournament for
10 consecutive seasons and has cleared teams at CEDA Nationals for 19
consecutive years.
Gonzaga believes in educating
the whole person. Debates are won on the strength of research and strategy. At
Gonzaga we approach this concept as a team. We stress community and competition
in a supportive environment.

Team Information
While the James M. Rupp
Debate Society is relatively young, we have already built a tradition of
excellence in NDT/CEDA debate. We excel at both regional and national
tournaments. Team goals include
competitive success and providing a quality education for the debaters on the
squad. Debaters are expected to perform well in their classes and to make
progress toward graduation. Argumentatively, the team does not dictate what
type of argument debaters are allowed to run. We have both critical and policy
oriented teams. Despite our diverse
interests in arguments, teams members are expected to work together to support
the competitive success of the squad.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
James M. and Sharon E. Rupp
have funded a generous endowment including scholarships for Idaho State Debate.
Rupp Debate Society scholarships will be awarded to incoming and returning
students who have demonstrated academic debate success. Scholarships range from $100 to $2100 a
semester. They are awarded based on competitive success, work ethic, talent and
participation. Scholarships are renewed each semester. For out of state students, there is a good
possibility of obtaining out of state tuition waivers to cover the remainder of
the cost. A minimum 2.75 GPA is required for consideration for a
scholarship. To apply send a letter of
application, a resume, a copy of your high school transcript and a letter of
recommendation from your current coach to:

Team Information
The Liberty Debate Team began
in 1980 at Liberty University, then Liberty Baptist College. Liberty competes in policy debate as a
member of the National Debate Tournament, the American Debate Association, and
the Cross Examination Debate Association.
Since 1980, Liberty Debate has experienced rapidly expanding
success. Liberty Debate finished in the
top twenty in the National Debate Tournament rankings for the first time in
1989 and qualified for the National Debate Tournament for the first time that
same year. Since that time, Liberty has
consistently finished in the top five in the CEDA, NDT and ADA rankings. In 1995 Liberty claimed its first two
national rankings championships by finishing first in both the NDT and ADA
rankings. Liberty has now claimed
twenty-four national rankings championships in college debate and reamins the
only school to have won a rankings championship in all three policy debate
orgainzations. Liberty has consistently
qualified for the National Debate Tournament since 1989 and has appeared in the
elimination rounds of the NDT, CEDA, and ADA national tournaments on multiple
occasions.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
Scholarships are available to
qualified debaters and are based on prior debate experience and on
potential. Application should be made
directly to Liberty Debate, care of Bessie Grayson (bgrayson@liberty.edu).

NYU has active teams in
policy, parliamentary, mock trial, model UN and individual events as well as
outreach programs including the Brewer International Public Policy Forum for
high schools and partnerships with the Associated Leaders of Urban Debate
(ALOUD) and the Brooklyn Lab School.
NYU’s CEDA policy program is committed to building a superior
opportunity for all students to compete and grow through the vehicle of debate
at the novice, jv and varsity levels.
The NYU team had one of the quickest rises to national prominence
winning a national championship in its first decade. Each year, our goal is to compete for
championships at the novice, jv, and open levels. Tournament cancellations, due
to external factors, reduced our 2015-16 participant numbers by 35%. Last year,
we traveled 32 debaters. 85% of these
students were new novices.

Team Information
Pepperdine competes
nationally in both policy and British parliamentary debate. Experience levels
on the team vary and although we appreciate high school success, we are much
more concerned with commitment level and character.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
Pepperdine offers a number of
partial tuition scholarships for debate each year. Our amounts vary according to skill and
commitment level. Scholarships generally increase the longer you are on the
team. In addition, the financial aid
department at Pepperdine works hard to make sure that all admitted students
have the financial help they need.

Team Information
PLNU competes in all 11 AFA
Individual Events, NPDA Parliamentary debate and NFA LD debate. We are probably better known for success in
Parli Debate having won various NPDA National Titles in recent years, but we
stress a balanced program, encouraging speakers to compete in both debate and
IEs. It is possible though to do 4 IEs for
those that prefer not to debate. The
school combines faith and education in an uplifting Christian university
setting on the most attractive seaside campus in the country. There are lifestyle rules against
participating in the recreational use of drugs or alcohol, smoking, etc. . . that you should be aware of if that
is an important part of the college experience for you.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
The campus is generous in its
support of the program, but due to the size of the team the scholarships are
spread around to all team members based on past experience and success. We can help, but we won’t come close to
providing anyone with a full ride, unless you are a left handed pitcher that
brings the heat in the mid 90s. :-)

A small but regionally
competitive program, Purdue is one of the only Big Ten schools that competes in
NPDA-style debate (as well as BP/worlds-style debate, and the occasional foray
into NFA-LD). Operating essentially as a student-run organization, the team is
coached by graduate students and is funded entirely by money raised by the team
and with continuing support from a private endowment.

objective and striving for excellence yields competitive success.

Team Information
The Communication Department
has only recently resurrected its National Award Winning Forensic Team. This
year will be the fourth year since 2002 that an operating Forensic Team is
housed at Snow. Already, Snow College has been recognized as one of the best
schools in the nation for competitive Forensics, at the Junior College and
University level combined. The team travels on average 6 times per year to
tournaments all around the nation and even internationally (this year we are
going to Paris), where they continue to rival top universities such as UCLA,
Carroll College, Boise State University, University of Utah, and more. Director
of Forensics, Malynda Bjerregaard is committed to starting back up as strong as
possible and currently have students on scholarship for the 2011-2012 school
year.
If you are interested in
competing on the Forensic team, contact Malynda Bjerregaard (malynda.bjerregaard@snow.edu) to
obtain further information. Snow’s Forensic team meets every tuesday, 5:30-8:30
in room HU 112.

With these goals in mind we submit to rigorous processes of research,
organization, presentation, and judgment in order develop student abilities to
speak well.

We don’t currently have a
debate scholarship set up, but we are hoping to get some established in the
future. One of the good things about The
New School is that it is a private university and the financial aid department
does it’s best to make sure that every student has their financial needs
meet. We do offer a few debate
work-study positions for students to assist in the adminstrative side of debate
and make some money at the same time.

Team Information
Trinity Debate is committed
to providing debaters with a variety of opportunities to participate at all
levels of college debate. The team is composed of students from all across the
country with diverse backgrounds and mixed levels of debate experience. From
late elims at the Tournament of Champions to a few regional rounds, we welcome
everyone onto the squad. Whatever your argumentative choice, someone on the
squad will be there to help you develop your arguments successfully. With a
supportive atmosphere, everyone will find a place on the team. As a nationally
competitive squad, we have a proud history of success, from regularly
qualifying two teams to the National Debate Tournament to consistently reaching
elimination rounds at tournaments. Please contact us to find out more.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
On top of robust and
comprehensive financial aid packages crafted with the Financial Aid Office, the
team offers two different types of scholarships. The first is the Baker Duncan
scholars program. This scholarship is given to successful high school debaters
who want to pursue college debate. Students with experience in high school
policy debate are invited to apply. We encourage candidates to schedule a
campus visit and meet with the director of debate and the Trinity debaters.
Applicants should submit: * A letter of interest outlining their involvement in
competitive debate and their academic goals and interests; * A tournament-by
tournament record of their debate competitions; * A letter of recommendation
from their high school debate coach; * Optional: letters of recommendation from
anyone in a position to evaluate the applicant’s potential as a Trinity
debater. This award is renewable for up
to eight semesters, excluding summer, as long as the recipient participates at
an acceptable level in debate and maintains full-time enrollment and a
pre-determined grade point average. The second scholarship is available to
students participating in any of the nation’s Urban Debate Leagues. We can
offer up to two scholarships per year. Students interested in being considered
for the scholarship should be active in policy debate through an Urban Debate
League. Please send: * A letter of
interest outlining your involvement in competitive debate and your academic
goals and interests; * A tournament-by tournament record of your debate
competitions; * A letter of recommendation from your high school debate coach;
* Optional: letters of recommendation from anyone in a position to evaluate the
applicant’s potential as a Trinity debater. This award is renewed up to eight
semester, excluding summer, as long as the recipient participates at an
acceptable level in debate and maintain full-time enrollment and a
pre-determined GPA. Send all scholarship
application materials by February 28, 2014 to: Dr. Sarah Topp, Department of Human
Communication & Theatre, Trinity University, One Trinity Place, San
Antonio, TX, 78212. For more information, please don’t hesitate to contact

The University of Florida
Speech & Debate Team is comprised of both a policy debate squad as well as
an individual events squad and intramural public debate squad. The policy
debate and individual events squads each travel to approximately 10-12 tournaments
per year on the national and regional levels and have a competitive budget for
a team our size. In the last several years, the policy squad has qualified
teams for the National Debate Tournament and competed in elimination rounds at
the Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament as well as won
several junior varsity and novice tournaments and speaker awards. The
individual events squad qualifies students every year for the AFA-NIET with
students representing UF in the elimination rounds. While the team does not
currently offer scholarships, there are several opportunities at the University
of Florida for funding. The University of Florida has both a Director of
Forensics and a Policy Debate Coach as well as several Assistant Coaches who are
either faculty or graduate assistants. If you would like more information about
the University of Florida Speech & Debate Team, please contact any of the

Team Information
The Minnesota Policy Debate
Team was re-launched in Fall 2007 after a nearly two-decade hiatus and has
enjoyed considerable success, including First Round at Large Bids to the NDT in
2013 and 2015, qualification of at least one team to the NDT, winning the 2015
ADA National Championship, and frequent participation the elimination rounds at
CEDA Nationals. The debate team receives a high level of support from the
administration. The squad is made up of an outstanding group of students that
is committed to building a strong program that balances competitive excellence
with a commitment to debate as a powerful pedagogical tool and platform for
social change. The team competes extensively on both the regional and national
circuits, sending students to over twenty tournaments over the course of the
season. The University of Minnesota is a world-class university that is located
in the heart of one the best metropolitan areas in North America. The U has a
diverse and accomplished faculty, and offers over 150 undergraduate degree
programs. The Twin Cities are a fantastic place to live and go to school—great
music scenes, internationally renowned theaters and art galleries, a reasonable
cost of living, diverse (and nearby) outdoor recreational opportunities, and
all the amenities of a major city.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
The University offers a wide
array of merit- and need-based scholarships, and special consideration is given
to students with a debate background. The U also recently changed its tuition
structure so that out-of-state tuition closely matches in-state tuition. The
University is particularly interested in enrolling highly-qualified applicants
from other states.

Team Information
The University of Nevada Las
Vegas (UNLV) Sanford I. Berman Debate
Forum began competing as an NDT/CEDA debate team in the 2007-2008 school year.
The UNLV debate team, under the direction of Dr. Jake Thompson, is dedicated to
being consistently ranked as one of the top ten debate programs in the nation,
and ultimately winning a national championship. The UNLV debate team hosts the
Golden Desert high school tournament (a quarters policy TOC bid tournament) and
a prestigious college debate tournament.
The coaching staff is
dedicated to recruiting intelligent,
hard working and highly motivated high school
debaters. Scholarship opportunities abound, and our travel budget allows
us to travel to the best tournaments in the nation. For more
information, please e-mail Dr. Jake Thompson at jacob.thompson@unlv.edu. If you are interested in joining the UNLV
Debate Team, please visit our website and fill out our recruiting form at www.unlv.edu/debate/join
HERE ARE A FEW REASONS THAT
YOU MAY PREFER UNLV OVER YOUR OTHER COLLEGE DEBATING OPTIONS:
1) You can get in on the
ground floor of a team with incredible potential to grow—You could literally be
building the foundation for a national championship in your time on the squad.
2) As a frosh, you may have
the opportunity to travel to every major national tournament—you wouldn’t be stuck on the regional schedule to which
many incoming frosh are relegated.
3) Unprecedented financial
and university support for the team.
We are endowed by a private donor
and have a generous budget.
4) Incredible coaching staff
dedicated to bringing out the best in their debaters... We’ll work hard to help
you grow into the best debater that you can be. We’ll help you win a TON of
college debates if you decide to join us in Las Vegas.
5) The team was recently
given a MILLION DOLLAR scholarship endowment fund and so scholarship
opportunities abound, and UNLV already provides an excellent education at an
incredibly affordable price.
6) Opportunities abound to
work with local high school debate programs through the Las Vegas debate league
(LVDL). You can learn more as a debater through coaching, help the debate
community, and maybe even earn a few bucks in the process. 7)
It’s Vegas, baby!!! It’s an amazing town—diverse, interesting, and with tons of
stuff to do. Most other schools just don’t
match up when you compare the social life that you could have at UNLV. The college experience should be about
creating a whole person who is well-rounded—being in an amazing city that’s
constantly growing is an important aspect of fulfilling that goal.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
For more information about
UNLV debate scholarships, please visit www.unlv.edu/debate/scholarships.
The UNLV Debate Team recently received a MILLION DOLLAR scholarship endowment,
so scholarship opportunities for incoming debaters abound. UNLV debate scholarships are talent-based
scholarships. The amount of your offer
is dependent on previous debate experience/success and the content of your
answers to the student interest form.
Generally, we increase a student’s scholarship amount over time as they
improve their work skills,
increase their level of commitment/participation, demonstrate a desire to
learn/improve/win, etc. Since these are “talent”
based scholarships, students with incredible amounts of talent and previous
success in debate (elims at NFL or several TOC bids) would obviously receive a
larger initial offer than those students with limited experience.

Team Information
The University of North
Georgia is the sixth largest public institution of higher education in the
state of Georgia. Within the University
of North Georgia is the Georgia Military College, and UNG is designated a
Leadership University in the University System of Georgia. It has over 17,000 students, with campuses at
Dahlonega, Oakwood, Watkinsville, and Cumming.
Although UNG has mainly participated in public forum, parliamentary, and
international public debate, it also affiliates with District 6 of the NDT and
offers policy debate competition in years when there is a student demand. It lies in a geographic area known for the
very best in policy debate. As a student-run squad, students choose what form
of debate in which to participate. UNG’s
chief accomplishments since its 2013 founding include Outstanding New Chapter
at Pi Kappa Delta, one of seven Pi Kappa Delta all-Americans chosen at the 2013
PKD National Tournament and Convention, and an excellent sweepstakes for
finishing 13th out of 87 schools in debate at PKD nationals. Most
recently, the Program finished second place overall sweepstakes in 2014 at the
PKD National Comprehensive Tournament in debate out of 60 schools, and won
first place sweepstakes awards at LSU’s Mardi Gras Tournament (overall) and at
Oglethorpe (Debate) The team has a core
that ranges between 15-20 members, and last year, 80 students participated in
some sort of intramural or intercollegiate debate competition.. The team also competes in individual speaking
events in years where there is student demand and available resources. Most
notably, the team hosted the 2013 Georgia Forensic Coaches Association high
school state championship tournament, which attracted a number of the nation’s
top varsity policy debate teams to the Oakwood campus where over 300 persons
from 35 schools attended. Currently, UNG
hosts the Chicken and Egg Debate Tournament.
UNG offers policy intramural tournaments in three languages—Chinese,
Spanish, and English. Students earn one
hour per semester of course credit for being on the debate team—the first
course, Comm 2901, may be repeated up to four times; and the second one hour
course, Comm 3901, is taken each semester the third and fourth years and has a
coaching component. The academic
elements of this co-curricular activity are housed in the Department of
Communication, Media, and Journalism; and the club elements of the team and its
travel and event funding come from the Office of Student Involvement, as well
as private grant-writing and fundraising.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
UNG is a volunteer program
run by student devotees to the art of persuasion, beautiful and just—so, only
the Georgia Hope and academic scholarships at this time, as well as privately
funded scholarships unrelated to debate competition—but we are working on
it! Last year debaters winning the
Spanish speaking debate tournament earned small stipends for both making
elimination rounds and speaker awards, and tuition was reimbursed for Comm
2901, the debate practicum.

Team Information
The University of North Texas
debate team, supported by UNT’s Department of Communication studies, has more
than a half-century of competitive success in Cross-Examination (Policy)
Debate, having won the second National Debate Tournament in 1948. The legacy continues as North Texas
Debate reached the finals of the CEDA National Tournament in 2004, had the top
speaker at the National Debate Tournament in 2009, and advanced two teams to
the elimination rounds of the National Debate Tournament in 2013. UNT has
advanced a team to the NDT elimination rounds 8 of the last 12 years, and
qualified a team to the NDT in 25 of the last 28 years. UNT Debate accumulated multiple NDT First
Round At Large bids over the last decade, and North Texas debaters have seen
late elimination rounds at virtually every major competitive event in the country,
including recent trips to the elimination rounds of the NDT. Supported by a thriving Communication
Studies Department and accompanied by the University’s award-winning
undergraduate Honors College, UNT Debate offers a unique opportunity to attend
a national university and compete in the most rigorous debate events in the
nation.

The debate team at UNI
competes in two person, policy debate. People with all skill levels are
welcome. Members of the team travel to a variety of regional and national
tournaments, between 5 and 12 tournaments a year, depending on skill,
experience, and work level. All expenses for tournament travel are paid by the
debate program. The team embraces a wide variety of debate perspectives, from
more traditional counterplan/DA debate to topic specific critical debates. The
team is overseen by John Fritch, and each area (speech and debate), has a
director who is assisted by graduate students.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
The UNI Forensic Program is
able to offer several scholarships. The most frequently received of these
scholarships are the general program awards. Some specialized awards, such as
the Bartlett Freeland Debate Awards, the Ebel, and the Kohn, are also
available. The scholarship brochure from the Office of Financial Aid provides
more details about these specialized awards. The general program scholarships
are usually partial tuition awards. Some students who demonstrate exceptional
commitment to the program, however, may receive an award in the amount which
covers the full cost of in-state tuition. Students are selected to receive
forensic scholarships based on their level of commitment to the program, their
competitive contributions, and their academic standing. The UNI Coaching Staff
makes all of the scholarship decisions. Scholarships are open to incoming
freshmen, transfer students, as well as currently enrolled UNI students.

The William Pitt Debating
Union (WPDU) is a co-curricular program that serves as a hub for a wide range
of debating activities, including intercollegiate policy debate, public debate,
and debate outreach. One of the oldest organizations of its kind in the nation,
the Union grew originally out of the University of Pittsburgh’s Division of
Public Speaking in 1912. Today, the
WPDU is housed in the University’s Department of Communication and receives
support from the offices of the dean and provost. Undergraduate student
debaters have disparate backgrounds and academic concentrations, majoring in
subjects ranging from computer science to philosophy. Graduate student
assistant coaches weave their debate pedagogy with work toward advanced degrees
in communication, while two tenure-stream faculty members in the Department of
Communication jointly direct the program. The WPDU’s bedrock philosophy is that
argument can educate as well as emancipate. By providing forums for students to
sharpen critical thinking, deepen understanding of timely political issues, and
hone speaking skills, the Union actualizes its educational mission. By spurring
robust, inclusive discussion in the wider community, the Union performs its
politically emancipatory function, serving as a catalyst for reasoned public
dialogue on key issues facing local, national, and international
communities. Much of the Union’s
energy in pursuing these tasks comes from a team culture that places a premium
on group solidarity and cooperation. The resulting synergy enables cultivation
of a rich learning environment, attainment of competitive success, achievement
of scholarly excellence, and enrichment of public argument. Pittsburgh debaters have achieved a
remarkable track record of academic success, winning prestigious awards such as
Rhodes, Marshall, and Javitz scholarships, as well as Fulbright and
Brackenridge fellowships. The team’s commitment to academic achievement is
reflected in a strict travel policy that requires debaters to juggle team
research commitments while excelling in coursework.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
Debate scholarships are
available for incoming and returning students who are eligible to receive
merit-based financial aid from the University of Pittsburgh. Scholarship forms
are available in our main office and also can be downloaded from this website.
Decisions on scholarships are generally made in the spring of each year.

The UPS program travels to
20-25 tournaments a year competing in both NDT/CEDA (policy) and NPDA/NPTE
(parliamentary) debate. The program serves roughly 20 students a year—many of
whom are on scholarship. Located in the Pacific Northwest, the team travels a
regional schedule with national influence—participating in national tournaments
at Claremont, Wake Forest, Pepperdine, USC, CSU-Fullerton, Northwestern, Pt.
Loma, Regis, and elsewhere. Operating
under an “open-door” policy where any student may participate in forensics, the
program provides a unique location to meet the Mission Statement &
Educational Goals of the University. As a member of the UPS forensics program
students are required to work individually and as a team: --to develop research agendas, format
argumentation strategies, facilitate the learning of formal debate and public
speaking --to coalesce
inter-disciplinary methods to the practices of public deliberation --to establish personal and team goals and to gain both breadth and depth of
knowing on a variety of topics relevant to the broader humanity in a world
environment.

Puget Sound Forensics
Scholarships are based on academic and forensics achievement. Awards for
incoming students usually are $1000-$3000, renewable for three years based on
satisfactory participation in the forensics program and maintenance of a 3.0
grade point average. Since Puget Sound’s program focuses on debate, experience
in high school debate that emphasizes research is preferred. Deadline for application is February 15.

The Trojan Debate Squad (TDS)
is the USC organization devoted to teaching debate to students for over 125
years. Founded as the first-chartered student organization at USC in 1880, the
TDS is one of the nation’s leading collegiate debate programs. Today the TDS is a proud member of the
Annenberg School for Communication. Annenberg faculty and graduate students
teach debate to USC students from all degree programs. The Trojans primary
emphasis is intercollegiate policy debate and british parliamentary (BP)
debate. Strong faculty leadership also means that USC students are part of a
program where we are actively engaged in providing the foundation for a robust
future of academic debate. Debate isn’t simply a club at USC. Debate at USC is
a home for a strong outreach program working to expand debate opportunities for
high school students throughout Los Angeles. Debate at USC is a place where we
have launched the Annenberg Digital Debate Initiative ADDI the first of its
kind effort to re-examine academic debate so it can best reflect the skills
students need in this emerging digital age. We recently added support for BP
debate as a reflection of the global nature of BP debate. Interested students

varsity level. The squad has the financial and coaching resources to allow
talented incoming students to travel extensively. UT Dallas teams excel at both
regional and national tournaments, and compete annually at both CEDA Nationals
and the National Debate Tournament (NDT).
The squad has qualified every season for the NDT season since 2003 and
reached the quarterfinals in 2010. UTD’s
Brian Rubaie also won CEDA’s National Debater of the Year award that season.
The squad annually hosts a large intercollegiate tournament and a summer
workshop for high school students. UT
Dallas will host the NDT in March 2011. Students seeking more information should
visit the team’s website and contact the Director of Debate.
Are scholarships available at the

UT Dallas offers an extensive
package of merit-based and need-based assistance to a large portion of each
incoming class. There are also
scholarships reserved for experienced incoming debaters. Interested students

Team Information
Since Debate should teach
skills which can be ported to the rest of your life, we do not confine
ourselves to any particular space in which to speak. We compete primarily in the Cross Examination
Debate Association because of its rich, numerous and historic ties to academic
literature and its focus on developing argument before revealing it. On occasion, we venture to the Northeast to
hone our delivery and extemporaneous speaking skills with the American
Parliamentary Debate Association.
Experience is preferred but not required. If you attend the weekly meetings and
complete the suggested assignments, we will do our best to get you to
tournaments. We travel to about 12
tournaments a year. We are coached by Rashad Evans (JD University of
Pennsylvania), 2001 CEDA Nationals Champion.

Team Information
Wayne State is one of the few
truly “open” teams that has a 50 year track record as a top 25 team in the
nation. In terms of being open, we maintain a philosophy that every
student—whether they have elite high school experience or no experience at all
in forensics—is important to our program. Since 1958, we have had 6 top 10
speakers at the NDT, seven first round at large qualifiers to the NDT, two
final round appearances at the NDT, with an additional 24 appearances in the
NDT outrounds. In 2006 and 2007, Wayne reached the semifinals of CEDA and the
NDT and had the Top Speaker of the NDT. In addition, Wayne State has a highly
successful Individual Events team. In recent years, the team finished 1st
in the Michigan state tournament and finished in the top 25 of both the NFA and
AFA tournaments with students in finals, semifinals, and quarterfinals.
Are scholarships available at the
school?
Wayne State offers numerous
scholarship opportunities. We have almost full tution scholarship for our top
forensics students and several $500-1500 scholarships for students.
Additionally, at the end of the season, we give out monetary awards to the
season’s top competitiors. Please ask for more details.
